Factors Controlling Contemporary Suspended Sediment Yield in the Caucasus Region

چکیده

This paper discusses the joint impact of catchment complexity in topography, tectonics, climate, landuse patterns, and lithology on suspended sediment yield (SSY, t km−2 year−1) Caucasus region using measurements from 244 gauging stations (GS). A Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was used to reveal relationships between SSY explanatory variables. Despite possible significant uncertainties values, analysis this database indicates clear spatial patterns Caucasus. Most catchments Lesser Caucasia Ciscaucasia are characterized by relatively low values (<100–150 year−1), Greater generally have higher (more than 150–300 year−1). correlation analyses demonstrated that such proxies topography as height above nearest drainage (HAND) normalized steepness index (Ksn) tend be among most important ones. However, a PLSR suggested these variables’ influence is likely associated with peak ground acceleration (PGA). We also found strong relationship land cover types (e.g., barren areas cropland) different elevation zones. Nonetheless, adding more into refined characterizations may additional trends.

Estimating Total Suspended Sediment Yield With Probability Sampling

The "Selection At List Time" (SALT) scheme controls sampling of concentration for estimating total suspended sediment yield. The probability of taking a sample is proportional to its estimated contribution to total suspended sediment discharge. This procedure gives unbiased estimates of total suspended sediment yield and the variance of the estimate while automatically emphasizing sampling at h...

Factors controlling variations in river sediment loads

Sediment transfer from continents to oceans via rivers is one of the important processes regulating river-bank stabilization, soil formation, biogeochemical cycling of elements, crust evolution and many other earth-related processes. Due to changes in continental positions during the geologic past, water flow and sediment loads in rivers have also shown variations during different time periods....

Monitoring baseline suspended sediment in forested basins: the effects of sampling on suspended sediment rating curves

Rating curves are widely used for directly assessing changes in the suspended sediment delivery process and indirectly for estimating total yields. Four sampling methods were simulated over a 31-day record of suspended sediment from the North Fork of the Mad River near Korbel, California. The position and size of the four groups of plotted slope/intercept pairs indicated differences in bias and...

Partial Least Squares Regression for Determining the Control Factors for Runoff and Suspended Sediment Yield during Rainfall Events

Multivariate statistics are commonly used to identify the factors that control the dynamics of runoff or sediment yields during hydrological processes. However, one issue with the use of conventional statistical methods to address relationships between variables and runoff or sediment yield is multicollinearity. The main objectives of this study were to apply a method for effectively identifyin...

Determining Land Units Contributions to Suspended Sediment Yield Using Sediment Fingerprinting Method (Case Study: Tull Bane Basin, Golestan Province)

Fingerprint method is one of the new methods to determine the contribution of suspended sediment in the land units. In this method, a suitable composite (set) of diagnostic properties and a multivariate mixing model are employed to estimate the relative contribution of sediment sources to sediments transported to watershed outlet. This research carried out in the Tull Bane watershed with 3278.9...
